How to check the Visual Basic run time libraries version

To check if you already have the appropriate version of Visual Basic run time libraries installed on your computer you need to check the following files and their version:

   FILE VERSION
   --------------------------
   Msvbvm50.dll 05.00.4319
   Oleaut32.dll 2.20.4118
   Olepro32.dll 5.0.4118
   Stdole2.tlb 2.20.4118
   Asycfilt.dll 2.20.4118
   Comcat.dll 4.71

These files are located on the "Windows/System32" folder in Windows XP ("Windows/System" folder in Windows 95). Check the appropriate folder based on your version of Windows.

The version mentioned above is the minimum version. If your files have a higher version, you are OK. To check the version of the file, follow these steps:

  1. Use Windows Explorer (or any equivalent method) to open the appropriate folder and locate the file.
  2. Click the file with the mouse right button.
  3. On the pop-up menu click the "Properties" option.
  4. You will see a window with several tabs. Click the "Version" tab to see the file version.

If you have all of the above files with the required or higher version then you have the appropriate version of Visual Basic run time libraries installed on your computer and you do not need to install them, again. If this is the case, you can download a setup program that does not include Visual Basic run time libraries and reduce the download time.
